2009 is starting out with a bang and a new project. As some of you know, it has been my dream to start a sanctuary
for Senior and Special Needs animals, who, through no fault of their own, are being turned in for various reasons. These
2 groups are the last, if at all, to be adopted from our local shelters and rescue groups and are usually euthanized.
All of you know my love for these 2 groups and I would like to create a sanctuary for them to come to and spend the rest
of their lives at. The dream is becoming a reality as we have just leased a 5 acre piece of property
in the South Mountain area of Phoenix. WE ARE A 501 C 3 Non-Profit Organization, and the sanctuary will be run solely
on donations and with the help of volunteers. In talking with everyone I have found that there is much interest in a
facility like this and people want to help. Volunteers will be the core of the sanctuary as I still plan on operating
Loving Hands Pet Care and providing the quality of service and care you have all come to expect.
My dream has become reality and have found 5 acres located in the South Mountain area of Phoenix. There
is a huge number of these special creatures that get turned in because they are developing health issues and their humans
just can't care for them anymore.
The Sanctuary needs just about everything. We are starting from scratch and only have 1 small building to
work with - a chicken coop! We need to start building housing for the dogs and cats. We also need people
who have knowledge in building, plumbing, electrical work, etc. to give me imput and help to make this a reality. Because
I have chosen to have the Sanctuary for these "love bugs" instead of housing them in foster homes, expenses will be high.
The estimated cost per month will be $2,000 for housing, food, medical expenses, etc. If you would like to help with
some of these expenses, please donate anything you can, whether it's $5 or $500 at www.mingusmanor.com. If you come out to the facility, bring your pennies and loose change. We will have a barrel
setup to throw them in!! It all adds up and with your help and generosity, the animals will have the BEST for whatever
time they have left on this earth.
In the months to come we will be setting up workshops and activities for everyone to enjoy. We will be planting
vegetable gardens, composting, having cooking demonstrations, classes on how to make all natural pet treats and a workshop
to make memorial stones for your pet - to be placed at our memorial garden or to take home. If you would like to incorporate
a pets ashes into this stone, you will be able to do that also.
Please keep checking our website often to learn about the things to come at www.mingusmanor.com and drop me a line if you are interested in becoming a part of this project.
We have scheduled for very first fundraiser! We have planned a "Doggy Wash" on Sunday, October 18th - 10am-2pm
on the Sanctuary Grounds. Drop off your pooch, have breakfast at one of the many local restaurants in the area, like
The Farm at South Mountain (a local favorite!), Fat Daddy's and IHOP. Once you are done with breakfast, come back for
your clean "best friend" and a chance to win a handmade dog bed. We will be holding a raffle to win one of these
beds made by our very own Sue Higbee of Sue's Pet Friends. Sue devotes all of her spare time to make beds for
all of our local rescue groups. She will be donating these beds for our raffle and will also have them available for
sale. All proceeds from the raffle and the sale of these beds will be donated to the Sanctuary.
Come out and support this event and see where the money is going.
